T&T Soca star Destra Garcia wows fans in Venezuela.
The Queen of Bacchanal launched her post Carnival tour performing at Venezuela’s Carnival event in the capital city Guiria.
Destra – who is fluent in both Spanish and French, spoke to the capacity filled crowd in Spanish, instructing them to jump, wave and sing, to which they all complied.
She called the crowd response “overwhelming” and “shocking”, saying she did not expect Venezuelans to know her songs or that she would be treated like an ‘international celebrity’.
However she did acknowledge that with Venezuela being so close to Trinidad & Tobago, the carnival culture and Soca music has filtered across the nations.
It was Destra’s second time performing in the country, after launching the same event last year.
Destra wrapped T&T’s carnival with the her own ‘Festival of Bacchanal’ concert that featured a full lineup of guest artists -including fellow Trini David Rudder, New York’s Lyrikal, Rupee of Barbados, and a surprise appearance by Soca king Machel Montano, who had told Destra he would not be able to attend do to scheduling conflicts.
Destra next heads to Montserrat to perform there for the first time on March 17, and her 2016 carnival hit “Lucy” has been nominated in the International Song Contest. She is the only Caribbean artist to make the final list.
